Templates

Nine looks to start from.

A Template is a whole look: the picture underneath, the effects in order, four scenes and a palette. Pick one, play your song, and change anything.

The nine

Each one moves to your song.

From Print Shop to One Bit. Pick one: the stage plays it to La Perla, the way the app plays it to whatever’s on.

Halftone dots and two spot inks, a little out of register.

Aura → Halftone → Riso → Grain · Paper · In the app

VHS

A tube telly: scanlines, bleed and a wake behind everything that moves.

Aura → Trails → CRT → Grain · Graphite

Liquid

The picture runs and turns, and its colours follow a gradient.

Aura → Flow Warp → Swirl → Gradient Map · Graphite

Club

Folded into a kaleidoscope that holds on the beat, with a glow on the hits.

Aura → Mirror → Stutter → Glow · Graphite · In the app

Luma Bars

The picture as a grid of lights, each as bright as the picture under it.

Aura → Luma Bars → Glow · Graphite

Terminal

Drawn in letters, light to heavy, on a dark screen.

Aura → ASCII → CRT · Graphite

Time Smear

Every row from a different moment, so movement smears down the stage.

Two Worlds

Your picture, with a slow colour field screened over it. Swap in a video of your own.

Make it yours

Start from one. End with your own.

A template is an ordinary stack, so everything in it can change, and the look you end up with can be a template of its own.

  1. Pick one.

File ▸ New from Template ⇧⌘N shows all nine, each drawn to your song. Choose whether it brings its palette, its scenes and its picture.

  2. Play your song.

It moves to whatever’s playing from the first beat, and it’s one undo away if it’s not for you.

  3. Change anything.

Switch, reorder and open its cards, add your own, or swap the picture underneath. The effects

  4. Save your own.

File ▸ Save as Template keeps the layers, effects, scenes and palette you have now, under Yours.

Four scenes with each.

A template you save is a small .arpeggio file. Opened from the Finder, it joins the other person’s templates.

Its own colours.

Each comes with a palette, Paper or Graphite, or keep the one you have.

Questions

Are the templates free?

Yes. All nine come with Arpeggio, which is free, with no account, for macOS 14 or later.

Can I use one with my own picture or video?

Yes. Two Worlds is made for one: it puts a slow colour field over your picture. In any of them, swap the picture underneath for a photo or a video.

Can I share a look?

Yes. File ▸ Save as Template keeps the layers, effects, scenes and palette you have now, as a small .arpeggio file. Send it, and opened from the Finder it joins the other person’s templates, under Yours.

Do templates work with Spotify?

Yes. Every template moves with whatever’s playing, a song of your own or anything your Mac plays.

Which ones run in the browser?

VHS, Liquid, Luma Bars and Terminal run here, as they are in the app. The other five use effects that only run in the app.

Do I lose my own look?

No. Using a template is one undo, and you choose whether it brings its palette, replaces your scenes and uses its picture.

Keep going.
